Meet our newest Associates

We are very pleased to announce this great news!

From all of us at BALDER, we would like to give a special mention to our wonderful colleagues and friends María Alejandra Castillo, Francisco Javier Polop, Paula Díaz de Atauri and Carmen Ortega on their promotion to Associates.

María Alejandra, also affectionately known as MAC at BALDER, has extensive experience that combines international exposure, a solid academic background in law and a deep dedication of more than 20 years to Intellectual Property (IP). She studied law at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello and obtained a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property at the Universidad Metropolitana de Caracas. She also attended the management training program at Venezuela’s most internationally recognized management school, the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración IESA. Her career advanced significantly when she became director of the Trademark Department of a major Venezuelan IP firm, where she implemented ISO quality standards and became a partner. MAC also actively contributed to the Venezuelan IP community as a member of the board of directors of the Venezuelan association of industrial property agents COVAPI and actively participates in international IP organizations such as INTA and ASIPI. In search of new challenges and growth opportunities, in 2019 MAC and her family moved to Madrid to join BALDER and since then she co-manages together with the managing partner the Trademark and Design Practice of BALDER in Latin America.

Javier, European Patent Attorney, started his career as a patent attorney in the UK and then joined BALDER in 2018. Javier´s specialties are electromechanical and computer related technologies (Software). Thanks to his vast skill set and great attention to detail, Javier has contributed prominently to a wide variety of patent-related tasks. In particular, his work focuses on the drafting and the prosecution of patent applications, especially the prosecution before the EPO and Latin American Offices.

Paula, originally from Bilbao – after finishing the Master in International Law at ISDE (Madrid), where she had the opportunity to do an internship at the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office – decided to specialize in the field and expand her knowledge with the Master in Industrial and Intellectual Property and New Technologies at the University of Alicante. She joined BALDER in 2016, where in addition to dealing with prosecution, defense and surveillance of both national and international trademarks, research, trademark portfolio management, negotiations and drafting of contracts of different kinds, she had the opportunity to be one of the persons in charge of the revision and improvement of the New Generation Guidelines of the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) as a member of MARQUES’ EU Trademark Law and Practice team, an experience she particularly enjoyed and where she was able to deepen, even more, her knowledge of the EU trademark and of the criteria adopted by the EUIPO in the proceedings before it.

Carmen, after completing a specialization in industrial property at Queen Mary University of London, joined our team in 2018. Her experience includes managing trademark and design portfolios both nationally and internationally, negotiating and drafting contracts, as well as intervening in disputes in both extrajudicial and judicial forums. Thanks to her attention to detail and strategic approach, she has become a key player in the defense of our clients’ rights both in Spain and abroad.

We are very proud of all your achievements, and we sincerely appreciate your efforts to serve BALDER´s clients.

It is an absolute joy to have you all on our team. Congratulations María, Javier, Paula and Carmen!
