In 1999 Karin obtained her Law degree from the Madrid Autónoma University but did not start working as a lawyer immediately. Instead, she first moved to Berlin, Germany, where she commenced Economic studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. After four years in the exciting German capital studying, working and -why not? – also having a lot of fun, she moved on to Prague, working one year at the Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy as an expert in Foreign Trade.
After her Czech experience, during which she could not help becoming a huge fan of the excellent Czech beer, nostalgia finally made Karin move back to her hometown Madrid, and in 2004 Karin joined one of the most important Spanish IP firms, where she discovered her passion for IP matters and specifically for trademarks.
Due to her mixed background -Austrian mother and Spanish father- and her language capabilities, for eight years she managed trademark portfolios for foreign clients. That work included trademark clearance, trademark filing strategy, opposition proceedings, revocation actions and invalidity actions in different jurisdictions, such as Spain, the EU and Latin America.
In 2012 she got the opportunity to start at BALDER. She did not hesitate a bit to join the challenge of being part of this new project in view of the qualities of its founding members, whose main features can be summarized as high motivation, professionalism and enthusiasm which are contagious; and the chance they give their members to grow professionally. It is a pleasure to see that these features remain intact within BALDER a few years later, which perfectly sums up the firm’s slogan “Motivated people!”.
Karin is shifting in her work towards legal matters and acquiring new skills, while still handling trademark matters, which she still loves. And, as Yoda said: “There are no limits, only our fears stop us”.
In her very little spare time, Karin is mainly devoted to her three children, thanks to whom she is not just an IP expert, but also in animated films, Lego® building and singing songs from beginning to end, such as ‘Let it go’ from Frozen (though a bit out of pitch).
