Cristina graduated in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona in 2000, specialized in organic chemistry and biochemistry. During her last year at university, she had her first contact with the world of research which motivated her to subsequently perform a Master in Experimental Chemistry and her PhD, in the area of organometallic chemistry, both at the University of Barcelona.

When doing her PhD, she was given the opportunity to work as patent translator, and it was at that moment that her curiosity about the field of intellectual property awakened. Due to this new interest in IP, she took a postgraduate course in patent and regulatory affairs, which brought her closer to the pharmaceutical industry, and gave her a dual perspective of the field.

After the postgraduate course she worked in the area of regulatory affairs, until an opportunity to work in patents finally arose! She first worked for more than 3 years in a well-known nanoscience and nanotechnology research institute, managing the patent portfolio and enhancing the protection of in-house innovation.

It was during that period that she became aware of the existence of a European patent qualification, namely, the “European Patent Attorney” title. As Cristina loves studying, she here found a goal to pursue during the following years. With this objective in mind, she went back to the pharmaceutical industry, in particular to the area of generic drugs, as patent counsel. There she found out about the other side of patents, which is the assessment of the risk of patent infringement. Here, her knowledge about regulatory affairs also proved particularly helpful.

In 2018 she accomplished her dream of enrolling for the European Qualifying Examination (EQE), and after passing it, she joined a project of the European Patent Office as a volunteering coach; the project provides support to candidates from different Member States throughout their EQE training. Meanwhile, she began her training to become a Spanish Patent and Trademark Attorney, an objective that she recently achieved, in late 2019, almost at the same time as she joined BALDER, a new project surely involving lots of exciting challenges!

In her leisure time, Cristina loves reading fantasy books and learning new things. Besides, she likes to spend time with her family and friends, and she is very keen on doing hand-crafted jewelry projects.
