Brazil Joins the Hague System

WIPO has announced that Brazil has joined the Hague System, bringing the number of countries covered to 96.

Brazil has recently become the 71st Contracting Party to the 1999 Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement and the 79th member of the Hague Union starting August 1, 2023, thereby joining WIPO’s international design system. This means that from August 1, 2023, designers and business owners in Brazil can seek protection for their designs in any of the 96 countries covered by the Hague System by filing just one international application.

Non-residents will also be able to secure international design protection in Brazil through the Hague System, facilitating business expansion into Latin America. Brazil’s instrument of accession includes several declarations, such as mandatory indication of the creator of the design and a maximum duration of protection of 25 years.
