Ph.D. in Chemistry

In 1991 Dr. Carlota Vergas obtained her Master in Chemistry at the Madrid Autónoma University. She was thereafter a doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institut für Biochemie, in Munich, Germany, for four years, working on her thesis about the enzyme aminopeptidase P from pig kidney (Vergas Romero, C., et al. “Purification and amino acid sequence of aminopeptidasa P from pig kidney Eur. J. Biochem. 1995, 229). After finishing her thesis, she stayed in Germany for another four years, in the Frankfurt area and in Hamburg, where she got married and had two children. But in the year 2000, Carlota and her family moved back to Spain.

Since 2001 she has worked for three different IP firms in Madrid, as a patent adviser. Her practice is focused on the drafting and prosecution of patent applications before the different national/regional Patent Offices, carrying out prior art searches and preparing patentability, infringement, validity and freedom to operate opinions, in the chemistry and pharmaceuticals areas. She has advised major pharmaceutical companies and has been involved as an expert in several patent infringement lawsuits. She has also acquired experience in SPCs for pharmaceuticals.

In 2006 Carlota joined the Patent Department of one of the best known Spanish IP firms, with offices in Spain, Portugal and throughout Latin America, where she worked in close cooperation with some of the co-founders of BALDER, with a special focus on the prosecution of patent applications in Latin America and before the EPO.

Carlota is a partly qualified European Patent Attorney, a native Spanish speaker, and is fluent in English, French and German.

In her spare time, Carlota enjoys going for a walk with her group of friends and their dogs, practicing aqua-gym and birdwatching. She also likes spending time with her family, being in the nature and walking in the mountains. She loves reading and classical music.
